Week 5 is where college football starts telling the truth, and my list of CFB best bets today is empty on purpose. Nothing has cleared. That is not a tease, that is Tuesday.
The wire this morning is wall to wall Playoff math: updated projections, a bubble watch, a bowl map with thirteen SEC teams penciled into a postseason spot. That stuff is fun to read and it is also the sport's most reliable fog machine. Fog is how a team gets repriced off one Saturday. The reporting has Penn State still alive in the Playoff chase despite the loss, and teams that lose and stay alive behave very differently over the next two weeks than teams that lose and get buried. That is worth more to me than any bracket projection.
what i'm eyeing in cfb this week
- Penn State at Northwestern, Friday night. A ranked team coming off a loss, on the road, on a short Friday turnaround, in a stadium where the lake does what it wants in October. What turns it into a play: a number that treats last Saturday as a trend instead of a game, plus confirmation nobody important is moving gingerly at Thursday's session.
- Navy at Air Force, Saturday noon. Two run-first operations, altitude, and a clock that bleeds out in a hurry when both offenses cooperate. The total is the market I want here, not the side. What turns it into a play: the wind reading in Colorado Springs and both quarterback situations being what I think they are.
- Alabama at Mississippi State, Saturday noon. Road SEC, early kick, cowbells, and a Starkville crowd that has ruined better mornings than this one. What turns it into a play: a price that has already paid for all of that and then some.
- Michigan at Minnesota, Saturday noon. Two teams whose identity is the run game and whose margin swings on one possession. checked the almanac: the Little Brown Jug traces back to a 6-6 tie in 1903, when Michigan left a water jug behind in Minneapolis and Minnesota simply kept it. Oldest trophy in the sport, still on the table at noon. Back to business: I want the total more than the side.
- Notre Dame at North Carolina, Saturday noon. Noon kicks flatten favorites more often than the market wants to admit, and this is a travel spot on top of it. What turns it into a play: a number that hasn't accounted for the body clock.
the one i lean on
The service academy game. Navy at Air Force is the spot where my number and a market number are most likely to disagree, because totals in games like this get set off season-long averages that don't survive contact with altitude and a shortened possession count. My lean is the under. It is a lean, not a play, and it will stay a lean until I see a number worth touching. Mind the gap like it owes you money, but do not go inventing one that isn't there.
Everything on this list is a spot, not a position. Small edges over and over, never heroics, and a Tuesday with an empty board is part of the job rather than a failure of it. This stays entertainment with variance, 21+ where legal.
What I'm watching next: the health reports coming out of Happy Valley before Friday, and the wind forecast in Colorado Springs Saturday morning. Those two answers fill out half this list. You know where to find me.
