Tuesday nights in November are for homework, not plays. The committee drops its first College Football Playoff rankings tonight with a new Strength of Conference Enhancement baked into the formula, which means half the bubble conversation gets rewritten before the sun comes up Wednesday. Nothing to act on yet. Plenty to watch.
Here's what's on my desk before anything clears.
- Florida State at Boston College, Saturday noon. The reporting out of Tallahassee is as clean as these things get: Duce Robinson, the Seminoles' leader in both receiving yards and touchdowns, tore his ACL and is done for the year. That's not a tweak to a depth chart, that's a different passing game walking into Chestnut Hill. What turns this into something real: watching whether the full game number actually moves to reflect one fewer dangerous read for FSU's quarterback, or whether the market is slow-playing it because the loss happened midweek. If the total barely budges by Friday, that's a tell.
- Texas at Missouri, Saturday noon. Eli Drinkwitz spent Tuesday publicly ruling himself out of the Florida State opening, which tells me he'd rather coach his own backfield than field questions about somebody else's job. Jamal Roberts and Ahmad Hardy both being full-go against a Texas front is the actual story here. I want to see if a two-back rotation against a defense built to stop one is enough to move a number off what the public still assumes is a Texas mismatch.
- Clemson at Syracuse, Saturday noon. Syracuse is rising fast after its first ranked win of the year and ESPN just swapped in a new broadcast crew for the occasion, which usually means the audience is catching up to a team the model noticed weeks ago. Soft market territory. Worth tracking whether the line has fully absorbed Syracuse's form or is still anchored to preseason expectations of Clemson.
- TCU at Arizona, Friday 10:15 PM ET. Late West Coast kickoffs get less attention from the market than the noon slate, simply because half the handicapping world has already clocked out by then. That lag is the whole edge. I'm watching for whether the number reflects Arizona's full home-field value or still carries a Friday-afternoon shrug.
- The CFP's new Strength of Conference Enhancement, debuting tonight. First year for a new input into a formula that already moves markets every November. I want to see which bubble team gets the first real boost or ding from it before I trust anything the committee says for the rest of the month.
The one I lean on most
Florida State at Boston College. Not a play, a lean. Robinson's absence is confirmed, significant, and fresh enough that I'm not convinced the full number has caught up to it yet. If the move I'm watching for shows up by Friday, it's a live conversation. If it doesn't, the math says pass, and I'll say so.
What I'm watching next
Whether the Boston College number actually reflects one fewer FSU weapon, and what the committee's new conference metric does to the bubble the first time it's applied.
Nothing cleared today. That's not a complaint, it's Tuesday. Come back when the board catches up, or just ask Big Mike.
