The San Antonio Spurs spent the preseason answering one question everyone in the building already knew they'd eventually have to answer: how do you fit De'Aaron Fox, Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle on the floor at the same time. Wednesday night, coach Mitch Johnson finally did it, and the Spurs beat the Suns 123-103 in Phoenix with all three guards sharing the backcourt.
Call it overdue. Johnson had been feeling out combinations all preseason, understandably cautious about three ball-dominant guards stepping on each other's spacing. But the roster San Antonio built this offseason only makes sense if those three share the floor. Fox arrived as the lead creator this franchise has lacked since Tony Parker. Castle, last season's Rookie of the Year, is a 6-foot-6 guard who can defend multiple positions and still run offense when Fox sits. Add Harper into that mix and the Spurs have a backcourt with size, shot creation and defensive versatility that very few teams in the league can match, on paper anyway.
Preseason blowouts don't settle anything. A 20-point win over Phoenix in mid-October tells you lineups can coexist, not that they'll thrive when the games count and opposing coaches start scheming around them. But for a Spurs team trying to build real continuity around Victor Wembanyama, getting this group's reps in before the regular season opener matters. Johnson needed to see it work, even once, before committing to it as a staple.
What happens next is the real test. San Antonio hosts Sacramento on Friday night, and that's the kind of game where the lineup gets its first real look against a team trying to win, not just evaluate. Does the spacing hold when a defense actually scouts it? Does Fox play off the ball as comfortably as he plays with it in his hands? Those are the questions the preseason box score can't answer, only the next few weeks of real minutes can.
The Spurs have been patient about this roster for two years now, collecting pieces and letting the timeline work itself out around their young center. Wednesday night looked like the first real glimpse of the payoff.
