Quiet Thursday on my end. One game on the slate, no graded picks to report, and most of the real signal came out of the injury report instead of a box score. That's fine. Some of the best weeks start this way, with a notebook full of maybes and nothing I'm ready to act on yet.
Here's what's actually on my radar heading into Friday and the weekend.
NBA odds today, before anything clears
- Portland Trail Blazers @ Los Angeles Lakers, Friday 10:10 PM ET. Ja Morant is out with a grade 2 hamstring strain, minimum four weeks per the reporting. That's not a tweak, that's a real chunk of a season, and Portland's offense runs through him more than any other single player on that roster. I want to see how the backup point guard minutes shake out before I touch a number here. If the Blazers' rotation at the one looks like a downgrade in real possessions created, not just box score minutes, that's what turns this into a play.
- San Antonio Spurs @ Portland Trail Blazers, Saturday 10:00 PM ET. Same injury, different night. Wemby's been the best story in basketball early, and Stephen A. was out there Thursday needling Skip Bayless for sleeping on it. I'm less interested in the noise and more interested in whether Portland's offense craters a second straight game without its engine. Back to back Blazers spots without Morant is a sample worth tracking, not a conclusion yet.
- Philadelphia 76ers @ Cleveland Cavaliers, Friday 7:40 PM ET. The LeBron and Jaylen Brown era in Philly opened by spoiling ring night for the Knicks, which is about as good a first impression as a new-look roster can make. Stephen A. is already saying this team wins it all if Embiid stays healthy, which is the right question and the only one that matters. I'm watching the injury report on Embiid right up to tip, because that single line item moves more than any stat I could pull.
- Lakers roster shape, this weekend. Bronny James got sent down to the G League affiliate Thursday, a development move more than a signal, but it does tell you the Lakers' rotation is settling into something firmer. Worth knowing before they host Portland Friday and travel to Detroit Sunday.
The lean, and I mean lean, not a play, is the Blazers' two-game stretch without Morant. Checked the almanac on this one: when Steph Curry broke his hand in Phoenix back in October 2019, it took the market the better part of two weeks to fully price in how much the Warriors' offense collapsed without him. Markets are sharper now, but they're not instant, especially with a hamstring strain nobody's confirmed a firm return date on. That gap, if it's there, is the kind of thing worth watching close. Nothing's cleared my number yet. If it does, you know where to find me.
