Florida didn't lose the Lane Kiffin sweepstakes. That's the argument going around the sport this morning, and the case for Jon Sumrall at Florida is better than Gators fans were told to expect last winter, when every athletic director in America had Kiffin's number saved and LSU was the program that actually dialed it.

The pitch is simple. Kiffin was the name. Sumrall was the builder. Those are not the same job, and Florida may have gotten the harder one to find.

Why Florida hiring Jon Sumrall over Lane Kiffin looks smart

The resumes do most of the arguing. The reporting lists Sumrall's Troy teams at 38-8 across 2022 through 2025, with a 12-1 season in 2024 sitting in the middle of it like a thesis statement. Over that same stretch, Kiffin's Ole Miss groups went 31-14. Good football. Very watchable football. Never quite the breakthrough.

Coach, recent stopRecordNote
Sumrall, Troy (2022-25)38-812-1 in 2024
Kiffin, Ole Miss (same stretch)31-14no playoff breakthrough
Fisher, Texas A&M (4 years)28-245-7 in 2025
Norvell, FSU (since 2024)22-6ACC title game in back-to-back years

Now, the honest counterweight, because seven games at Troy is not seven games in the SEC: Sun Belt wins and SEC Saturdays are different animals wearing the same jersey. Kiffin has coached at Tennessee, USC, Alabama as a coordinator, FAU and Ole Miss. He has been shot at and he has shot back. The men who worked with Sumrall say the same sentence about him every time, players, assistants, equipment staff, everybody: he builds the thing, he doesn't just stock it. That's a tell about culture. It is not yet a tell about beating Georgia.

So pump the brakes on printing anything. The resume says Florida did fine. The next three Octobers will say whether Florida did great.

Is Jimbo Fisher going back to FSU?

The other noise in the carousel is Jimbo Fisher's name drifting back into the Florida State conversation, and that one deserves a colder read. His four years at Texas A&M came out 28-24, including a 5-7 finish in 2025. Meanwhile Mike Norvell has the Seminoles at 22-6 since 2024 with ACC title game appearances in consecutive seasons. Nostalgia is undefeated until it has to call plays.

checked the almanac: fisher did win it all in tallahassee, the BCS title to close the 2013 season, jameis winston and the comeback over auburn. that team was wonderful. it was also twelve years ago, and neither the coach nor the program is the same organism anymore.

The fan fantasy is that you can re-sign a feeling. You can't. You can only hire a coach, and FSU already employs the one winning at a high clip.

What comes next for Sumrall and the Gators

The talking stops Saturday. Florida goes to Missouri at 3:30 ET, a ranked road test in a week where the wire has Alabama, Ohio State and the Gators all walking into hostile buildings as favorites in name only. That is the exact spot where a program builder either shows you the foundation or shows you the drywall.

I'll be watching Florida's third quarter. Not the box score, the third quarter. Sumrall's Troy teams had a reputation for being the better-conditioned, better-organized group after halftime, and if that travels to an SEC road game in October, Gators fans will know something real about this hire by dinnertime. If it doesn't travel, that's information too.

That's the whole carousel, honestly. Everybody argues about the hire in December. The hire answers back in the fall.
