Wednesday in college football and the whole sport is arguing with itself. The first CFP rankings dropped and half the shows I flip through are calling the committee drunk, discombobulated, or worse. I love this sport most on weeks like this, when the committee's board and the market's board don't agree and somebody's wrong.
Nothing's cleared yet. Here's what I'm watching while the week fills in.
Florida State Seminoles odds today
Florida State fired Mike Norvell this week, and whatever program chaos follows a midseason firing usually shows up in the market before it shows up on the field. The Noles travel to Boston College Saturday at noon ET, their first game under whoever's holding the clipboard now. What would turn it into a play: a real number once the book has digested the coaching change, and some clarity on who's actually calling plays. Until then it's a storyline, not a spot.
the playoff odds gap nobody's talking about
The committee has Georgia second, Miami first, and Notre Dame eleventh. The futures market has Georgia the favorite, Notre Dame second, and Miami third. That's not a rounding error, that's the board and the committee reading two different seasons. I'm tracking how fast that gap closes as results pile up, because a market that disagrees with the committee this hard in November usually means somebody's price is stale.
rivalry weekend building
Saturday's slate stacks up fast: Texas at Missouri, BYU at Utah, Clemson at Syracuse, all noon kicks. None of them have a number worth repeating yet, but rivalry week always produces at least one line that opens soft and gets hammered by Thursday. I'll have real numbers once the board sets.
the Notre Dame injury situation
The reporting out of South Bend has an ankle issue on Notre Dame's radar heading into a marquee test, with one analyst already saying the Irish are "toast" in the rankings if that test goes sideways. I don't have a confirmed status yet and I'm not going to pretend I do. Worth watching once the injury report firms up.
the one I lean on
If I had to point at one thing before any number exists: Florida State at Boston College. Letdown spots after a coaching change are one of the most reliable soft-market windows in this sport. Checked the almanac: USC fired Clay Helton on a Monday in 2021, days before hosting Stanford, and the Trojans came out and beat them by three touchdowns. Markets don't always know what to do with a team that just got its head coach fired. That's a tell worth watching for, not a pick yet.
Nothing here is a play. It's the list I'm working from before a single number earns my attention. Mind the gap like it owes you money, and I'll have real numbers once the board sets. You know where to find me.
