Nothing has cleared yet. That is the honest headline on CFB best bets today, because Sunday in October is poll day, not play day, and the only football on the immediate calendar is a midweek trio that most of the country does not know exists yet.

So this is the radar, not the ledger.

The wire this morning is all rankings: the AP Top 25 entering Week 6, the coaches poll refresh after Week 5, and a national take declaring Florida's playoff hopes finished after a 45-17 loss at No. 25 Missouri. Poll Sunday is when perception gets reset in public, and perception is the raw material I work with all week. The polls do not move a football. They move the people who price the football.

What I'm eyeing in CFB this week

  1. Florida, post-obituary. A 28-point road loss to a ranked team is bad. It is not the same as broken. When a national voice says a program's season is over on a Saturday night, the next few weeks tend to price that team at its worst single result rather than its body of work. If Florida's next number drifts past where a functional SEC roster belongs, that is a spot. What turns it into a play: a number that treats them like a dead team when the tape says tired team.
  1. Missouri, the poll climber. The flip side of the same game. Teams that just hung 45 on a name opponent get taxed the following week, every year, in every conference. Nothing here yet. What turns it into a play: a price that assumes last Saturday repeats on demand.
  1. Southern Miss at Troy, Tuesday night. Sun Belt midweek, 8:00 ET, nobody watching but us and the people who have to. Thin markets with small crowds of money move on very little. What turns it into a play: a total that opens lazy and does not account for how these two actually play.
  1. Jacksonville State at Kennesaw State, Wednesday. Two young FBS programs on a stage that did not exist for them a decade ago. I want to see this one with my own eyes before I want anything else from it.
  1. New Mexico State at FIU, Wednesday. The long travel midweek spot is the oldest soft number in the sport. What turns it into a play: a road team getting respected for a trip that historically does not get repaid.

The one I lean on

Tuesday in Troy. Not a play. A lean, and a soft one, because the mechanism I trust most all season is a small-market midweek game where the first number posted is a guess and the correction comes later. Mind the gap like it owes you money, then wait for the gap to actually show up.

checked the almanac: the AP poll has been ranking college football teams since 1936, and ninety years in, people still argue about it every Sunday like it is binding law.

What I'm watching next: Florida's first look after the Missouri beating, and whether the midweek totals come out lazy. Nothing cleared my number this morning, and I am not going to pretend otherwise to fill a column. Keep it entertainment, keep it 21+ where legal, and keep the size yours.
