Week 5 and college football is doing what college football does: being the best and the dumbest sport we have, often inside the same hour. The reporting this morning had Houston, a top-25 team, playing in front of a sparse house after a kickoff-time request got turned down. Nobody is to blame and everybody is a little bit to blame. That is the frontier for you.

So here is my CFB best bets today list, with the honest caveat up front: this is a watch list, not a slate. One thing on my board has a number behind it, and it is a thin one.

What CFB best bets today look like before anything clears

  1. Temple at South Florida, 7:30 ET. The only spot my own numbers currently disagree with the offer, and only barely. USF priced at -200 on my screen, my fair sits at -204. Call it two thirds of a point of edge. What turns it into more than a lean: any late news on the Bulls' line of scrimmage personnel, because this is a trenches game dressed up as a tempo game.
  1. Washington at USC, 7:30 ET. Night game in the Coliseum, a venue that has eaten more road favorites than it should have. I want to see where the total settles relative to how both of these teams have actually been scoring, not how they look in highlight packages. A total I think is a touchdown light would get my attention faster than any side here.
  1. Miami at Clemson, 7:30 ET. Death Valley at night is the single most overpriced environment in the sport and also, annoyingly, a real one. Both of those things are true. I need the number to be paying me for the noise, not charging me for it.
  1. Texas Tech at Colorado, 7:31 ET. The 7:31 kickoff is a television tell, nothing more, but Boulder altitude on a late-season body clock is a real variable. If Tech's travel day was normal and the line treats this as a neutral field, I'm interested in the dog.
  1. Florida's skill group. Word came down that the Gators will be without their leading receiver, Vernell Brown III, against Missouri, with Bailey Stockton available. That is a top-eight team losing its primary target against a ranked defense. I don't have a number on this one, but a passing offense losing its first read changes what it is, not just how much of it there is. That's a tell worth filing.

The one I lean on

South Florida, and I want to be clear about how small this is.

South Florida ML vs Temple-200-204+0.66%

Two thirds of a percent is not a stand, it is a lean. It is the kind of edge that only means anything if you collect the same shape of it over and over without heroics, and it dies the second the price ticks to -210. Lay-the-juice spots on a Saturday night in the American are exactly where a small edge goes to get swallowed by one turnover. Mind the gap like it owes you money, but do not pretend the gap is big.

checked the almanac: before every Iowa home game since 2017, the stadium turns and waves at the children's hospital over the north end zone. GameDay is at Kinnick for Ohio State. One beat of wonder, then back to the numbers.

Nothing else on this board cleared my number this morning, and I'm not going to invent one to fill the column. This is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal, and the days you pass are the days that pay for the days you don't.

What I'm watching next: the Temple at South Florida price into kickoff, and whatever the Florida passing structure looks like without its leading receiver.

You know where to find me.
