Here is the honest version of CFB best bets today: I do not have one. Nothing on my board cleared this morning, so this is a radar column, not a slate. Five spots, what I need to see from each, and the one I lean on hardest. A lean. Not a play.

The mood out there is strange. The sport's biggest business question is being hashed out in a conference room, with the reporting describing the ESPN and CFP negotiations as "tough sledding" ahead of an October 9 deadline. Billions on the table and a calendar date circled. Meanwhile 130-odd teams are going to go play football anyway. The games remain the only part of this week nobody is renegotiating.

What I'm eyeing on the CFB board today

  1. Western Kentucky at New Mexico State, Thursday, 8 ET. Conference USA on its own island on a Thursday night, which historically means fewer eyes and softer handicapping on both sides of the counter. What turns it into a play: a price that actually pays me for the travel and the Las Cruces turf, and a look at who takes the first snap for each side before I commit to anything.
  1. North Texas at Tulsa, Thursday, 9 ET. This is a total watch, not a side watch. I want to see the first two drives and find out whether both of these offenses want to play fast or whether one of them has decided to shorten the game. That tells me more than any preseason idea I brought in.
  1. Penn State at Northwestern, Friday, 8 ET. Standalone Friday night, national window, every sharp eyeball in the country on one game. Big brand on the road against a host that nobody is afraid of. I will watch it. I will probably not play it. The market is at its sharpest when it only has one thing to look at, and that is usually my cue to sit on my hands.
  1. Navy at Air Force, Saturday, 12 ET. Commander-in-Chief's Trophy football, which is its own genre: possession-starved, clock-shortening, the kind of game where a punt is a legitimate strategic outcome. I am interested in the total here more than the side. What makes it a play is the game staying small on the whistle and the number not already accounting for it.
  1. Vanderbilt at Georgia, Saturday, 12:45 ET. Related note from the week: Gunner Stockton checked in at No. 8 in ESPN's quarterback ranking, which is a polite way of saying "good, not yet frightening." Georgia at home at lunchtime against a Vanderbilt program that has stopped being an automatic win for anybody is a spot where the quarterback question matters. I want to see the first quarter.

The one I lean on

Navy at Air Force. Not because I have a number I love, because I do not have one yet, but because the shape of that game has a personality the board sometimes underrates. Two offenses that want to hold the ball and hand it off compress everything: possessions, variance, the whole afternoon. The lean is toward the small version of that game. If the number respects it before I get there, I pass and say so out loud.

That is the whole radar. Nothing cleared my number this morning, and I am not going to manufacture one to fill a column. Small edges over and over, no heroics, and the discipline to post the empty days is the only reason the full days mean anything. Keep it entertainment, keep it 21-plus where legal, and remember variance does not care about your reasoning.

Next thing I'm watching: Thursday night's two kickoffs for tempo tells, and that October 9 CFP deadline, because what gets decided in that room shapes what December looks like for every team on this list.
