Monday in October and my CFB best bets today list is a blank page, which is exactly what it should be. Saturday is gone, the midweek slate hasn't come into focus, and the only thing on the wire is a projection argument about Florida. Nothing has cleared. That's not a cop out, that's the honest state of the desk at noon on a Monday.

What I love about this stretch of the calendar is that the sport goes quiet and weird. Seven games between Tuesday and Thursday, most of them Sun Belt and Conference USA, all of them played in front of people who genuinely want to be there. This is the wild frontier part of the season. I'm not dressing it up as more than it is yet.

CFB best bets today: the spots I'm actually tracking

  1. Southern Miss at Troy, Tuesday night. A Tuesday road game is a logistics problem before it's a football problem. Buses, hotels, a Monday walkthrough that isn't really a walkthrough. What turns it into a play: a number that treats this like a neutral Saturday and ignores the short week on the visiting side.
  2. South Florida at UTSA, Thursday. The one game this week with real national eyeballs on it, which usually means the market gets it closest to right. What turns it into a play: an injury report that lands late in the week and doesn't get fully absorbed. I don't have that report in front of me yet, and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.
  3. South Alabama at Arkansas State, Thursday. Sun Belt road trip, divisional familiarity, two staffs who've seen each other's tape until their eyes hurt. Familiarity tends to compress games. What turns it into a play: a total that prices this like a track meet when the film says grind.
  4. Sam Houston at Liberty, Thursday. Conference USA's newer furniture, and markets are thinnest where the sample is youngest. That's where soft lines live. What turns it into a play: a price that's clearly built off last year's identity instead of this year's roster.
  5. Florida's playoff standing. The reporting says ESPN's projected seeding still has the Gators inside the top ten even after the road loss at Missouri. Projections are vibes with a spreadsheet attached. The resume is the resume. I'm tracking whether the market treats that projection as information or as noise.

checked the almanac: appalachian state walked into michigan stadium in 2007 and left with a win, which is my standing reminder that a tidy October projection is a guess wearing a tie.

The one I lean on

South Alabama at Arkansas State. Lean, not a play, and I want that in bold type. Divisional rematches in the Sun Belt have a way of turning into something uglier and shorter than the preview suggested, and ugly is usually cheaper than pretty. If the total opens generous, that's where I start my work.

Until a real number supports one of these, the math says pass and I'm comfortable there. Small edges over and over, no heroics, and no inventing a Tuesday play because it's Monday and I'm bored.

What I'm watching next: the Thursday injury reports, especially out of San Antonio, and whether anything on the Sun Belt board opens soft enough to make me do the full de-vig. Keep it fun, 21+ where legal, and if it stops being entertainment it's 1-800-GAMBLER.
