Finals week always has a different hum to it. You can feel the league leaning forward a little, and this year there's a genuine new-building smell to it: an expansion franchise three seasons removed from not existing at all, hosting a Finals opener. That's the kind of thing that makes we sit up straight before we even get to a number.

But the thing actually sitting on my desk this morning isn't the venue. It's a hand.

Allisha Gray had a minor procedure on her left hand this week and is being labeled day-to-day for Saturday's Game 1 in Golden State. She's already missed Atlanta's last two playoff games with the same injury. "Minor" and "day-to-day" are doing a lot of work in that sentence, and until someone in Atlanta says the word "full" out loud, I'm not writing anything firm about this series.

what i'm eyeing

  1. Allisha Gray's hand, straight through Friday. She's missed two straight playoff games. Whatever limits she carries into Saturday changes Atlanta's rotation minutes and its perimeter defense in one move. What turns it into a play: an actual practice report or shootaround availability call, not a vague "progressing" line.
  1. Golden State hosting a Finals opener for the first time. New building, new pressure, a young roster finding out what a road team's silence sounds like in the fourth quarter. What turns it into a play: how Golden State's rotation actually handles that moment once the ball goes up, not how it looks on paper now.
  1. The venue shift for Games 3 and 4. The league moved those games to State Farm Arena to fit more fans in Atlanta. That's a demand tell, not a betting signal by itself, but it tells me this series has real juice behind it, and that juice tends to show up in a tighter, noisier road environment for Golden State later in the series.
  1. The league's own gambling-awareness push. The NBA and WNBA partnered with the National Council on Problem Gambling on a fan education campaign around the risks of betting on basketball this same week. Worth remembering while everyone gets excited about a Finals opener: entertainment with variance, 21 plus where legal, and if any of it stops feeling fun, 1-800-GAMBLER is there.

the one i lean on

If I had to lean anywhere right now, it's toward patience on Gray. Not a play, a lean: I think she plays some version of Game 1, limited, and Atlanta's margin for error shrinks accordingly. That's a read, not a number, and I'm not pretending otherwise.

Nothing has cleared my desk yet today. No market numbers worth repeating, no edge I'd put my name on. The Finals open Saturday and the real information, Gray's actual status, shows up closer to tip. I'll have it when I have it.

You know where to find me.
