There is no WNBA basketball today, so WNBA best bets today is really a list of homework, and I'm fine with that. Saturday in October is the quiet before the loud part: exit interviews in Indiana, recruiting news out of Columbia, Caitlin Clark doing guest picker duty on a college football set in Iowa City, and four teams somewhere in a film room arguing about coverages. Tomorrow the season gets small and mean. Today I take notes.
Nothing is on my board. I want to say that at the top rather than bury it under five hundred words of throat clearing.
What I'm tracking before the WNBA semifinals
- Las Vegas at Golden State, Sunday, 4:00 PM ET. The Valkyries get a semifinal home crowd in a building that has not had many nights like this yet, and crowd noise is a real input in a league where rotations are seven, eight deep. What turns it into a play: a number that prices Golden State like a cute story instead of a team that earned the round.
- New York at Atlanta, Sunday afternoon. Atlanta's physicality against New York's spacing is the matchup I want to watch before I want to price it. What turns it into a play: a first-half or total read where my pace number and the posted one disagree by more than noise. Right now they don't.
- Kelsey Mitchell's free agency. She said Saturday she plans to be "selfish" about the decision, which is exactly the right word and exactly what every front office in the league heard. Both the GM and the head coach called keeping her a top priority. That's a tell about Indiana's whole offseason shape.
- Indiana Fever betting news that isn't a number yet. The GM also used her exit session to defend the fanbase, saying attacks on it have no basis in reality. Not a market item. It is context for a franchise that is going to be a loud offseason story either way.
- South Carolina landing Taylor Brown, the No. 30 player and No. 5 point guard in the 2027 class. Three years from mattering to anything I price. I write it down anyway, because the pipeline is the league.
The one I lean on
Golden State. A lean, not a play, and the difference between those two words is the whole job. I like a home underdog that has already proven it belongs in the round, and I like it more when the public narrative is still "expansion team" instead of "semifinalist." If the number comes back respecting Las Vegas the way last month respected Las Vegas, I'm interested. If it has already adjusted, I'm out and I'll say so.
From the almanac: the Valkyries played their first regular season game in May 2025. That is a very short walk to a semifinal, and I don't think the market has fully caught up to it.
So: nothing cleared my number this morning, because there is nothing to clear until Sunday's prices exist. Mind the gap like it owes you money, and keep it the size it's supposed to be. This is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal, and 1-800-GAMBLER is there if the fun stops being fun.
What I'm watching next: the Sunday injury and availability word out of both buildings, and whether Indiana's Mitchell conversation produces an actual number or just more warm quotes. You know where to find me.
