Taylor Brown is going to South Carolina. The No. 30 player and No. 5 point guard in the SC Next 100 class of 2027 committed to Dawn Staley on Saturday, and while a 2027 commitment is a long way from a box score, the position matters more than the ranking does. Staley just got a floor general, with two full prep seasons left to shape her.

Here is why I perked up. Staley was a point guard. Not a coach who tolerates point guards, not a coach who recruits one because the roster sheet says she needs one. A genuine floor general who built an entire career out of seeing the pass a half second before anybody else did. When that coach signs off on a lead guard, she is not grading the highlight package. She is grading the decisions.

And Columbia has become the place where that pitch sells itself. Staley has won national championships at South Carolina in 2017, 2022 and 2024, and the 2024 team went through the whole year unbeaten. You do not need a recruiting pitch deck when the banner does the talking. The hard part of her job now is not getting players to answer the phone. It is deciding which ones fit a program that reloads instead of rebuilding.

I do not have Brown's full scouting profile in front of me yet, so I am not going to pretend to know her game beat for beat. What I know is the ranking, the position, and the coach. That is enough to say this is a real get rather than a depth signing.

What comes next is the boring, important part: two more high school seasons, an evaluation circuit, and the usual churn of a class that is still eighteen months from signing anything. Classes move. Rankings move more. But a top-five point guard choosing the program that has set the standard in this sport for the better part of a decade is not a coin flip decision, and it rarely unravels quietly.

I will be watching where she lands in the next SC Next 100 refresh, and whether Staley stacks another guard on top of her.
