Hannah Hidalgo is staying at Notre Dame for her senior year, and the way she said it matters as much as the fact itself. A "no brainer," per the reporting out of South Bend, with no other offers entertained along the way. Not weighed and rejected. Never considered.
That second part is the story. We have reached a point in college basketball where the offseason is its own season, where good players get their phones lit up by programs that can pay, and where "I'm exploring my options" has become the standard script. The default assumption now is that everybody at least listens. Hidalgo says she didn't even do that.
You can like it or find it quaint, but you can't call it common. Loyalty is not supposed to be the interesting angle anymore. Here it is.
On the floor, she is exactly the kind of player other programs would empty the account for: an All-American guard whose whole identity is pressure, ninety-four feet of it, the kind of defender who turns a casual inbounds pass into a problem. She pushes tempo because she creates the chances herself. Teams don't game plan against her so much as they try to survive her.
checked the almanac: notre dame's last national title came in 2018, when arike ogunbowale buried buzzer beaters in back-to-back games, over uconn in the semifinal and over mississippi state for the trophy. one weekend, two shots, a banner. that's the standard hanging in the rafters for whoever wears the gold.
What comes next is a senior season carrying real weight. Hidalgo arrived as a prodigy, grew into the face of the program, and now gets the one thing the portal era rarely grants a star: continuity. Same building, same system, same teammates who already know where she wants the ball. Four years in one place used to be the baseline. Now it reads like a statement of intent.
The thing I'll be watching is whether the Irish build the roster around that permanence. A senior guard who never once looked at the exit is a recruiting pitch all by itself, and a locker room tone-setter besides. The decision is made. The season is the answer.
