Arike Ogunbowale scored a record 45 points with the Dallas Wings one possession from the offseason, hit the tying three to force overtime, and dragged this first-round series to a Game 3 against the Golden State Valkyries. That is the entire story, and it is as big as it sounds.

Understand the setting. Elimination game. A roster that had already used up most of its margin for error. And one guard deciding, apparently around the third quarter, that the season was not ending on her watch. The tying three is the part people will replay forever, because the shot is the thing that gets replayed. The 45 is the part that actually did the work. You do not accidentally score 45 in a playoff game against a defense that knows exactly who is getting the ball and has every reason to put two bodies on her. She got there anyway.

checked the almanac: the single-game playoff scoring mark in this league had stood since 2010, when Angel McCoughtry put up 42 for Atlanta. fifteen-plus years, one night, gone.

If the name feels built for this, it is. Ogunbowale is the same player who hit the buzzer-beater over UConn in the 2018 Final Four and then turned around and hit another one to win the national championship against Mississippi State two nights later. Some players shrink when the gym goes quiet and everybody in it knows the ball is coming to them. She has spent eight years proving she is the other kind.

What comes next is the hard part. Golden State is a young franchise that was two minutes from its first playoff series win, and now it gets a deciding game at home, where the Valkyries crowd has been one of the better stories of the season. The schedule has Dallas at Golden State Thursday at 9 ET, with a Friday date listed as well. The Wings need something closer to a normal distribution of shots, because 45 from one player is a miracle, not a plan. The Valkyries need to make somebody else beat them and live with the consequences either way.

I will be watching the first eight minutes of the decider: how many bodies Golden State sends at her, and whether Dallas has anybody willing to make them pay for it. Elsewhere in the bracket, Atlanta is already through to the semifinals for the first time since 2018.
