Nothing cleared my board this morning, and I'm not going to dress that up as suspense. There are three spots on my radar for NFL best bets today, and every single one of them is hostage to information I don't have yet: an elbow, a game plan, and the air over Cleveland.
Thursday in October is a strange animal. One game tonight, then a slate that opens at 9:30 in the morning from London because somebody decided football before brunch was a good idea. They were right, by the way. Doesn't make the handicapping easier.
What I'm eyeing for NFL best bets today
- Colts at Commanders, London, Sunday 9:30 AM ET. Jayden Daniels said Thursday he's taking the left elbow day by day and has no concerns about re-injuring it. That is the biggest unresolved piece of information on the week, and it isn't close. Day by day at the facility is one thing. Day by day with a transatlantic flight, a Friday designation, and a body-clock kickoff is another animal entirely. What turns it into a play: a definitive answer that I can act on before everybody else has priced the same answer. Right now I'd be guessing. Guessing is a hobby.
- Chargers at Seahawks, Sunday 4:25 PM ET. Mike McDaniel stood up Thursday and put the offensive struggles on himself. I respect it, and I also log it, because coordinators who publicly eat it tend to simplify the following week: more under center, more play-action, fewer exotic looks they can't execute. That's a tell about volume, not about talent. What turns it into a play: the total. A Chargers offense being rebuilt mid-season in a loud building is a game-script story before it's a side story.
- Steelers at Browns, tonight 8:15 PM ET. Division game, short week, Cleveland in October. I'm not watching a side here. I'm watching air. Lakefront wind is the one variable that rearranges a football game faster than any personnel note, and it's the last thing to get settled. What turns it into a play: a firm gusty read close to kickoff on a total that was built in calmer conditions.
checked the almanac: the first NFL regular season game in London was Giants and Dolphins at Wembley in October 2007, a 13-10 slog on a pitch that looked like a pasture. nineteen years later it's a TV window with a national broadcast built around it. the game travels well.
The one I lean on most
Indianapolis, and I want to be precise about the word lean. If the reporting firms up that Daniels is limited or down, the Colts become the most interesting side of the weekend, because a backup quarterback making his first meaningful start on another continent at breakfast time is a lot to ask. If Daniels is a full participant and starts, I'm off it entirely and I'll say so out loud. That's the whole position. A lean, not a play.
My process is boring on purpose: I don't put a number on a game until the injury report is final, and I didn't get one today. Small edges over and over, no heroics. Nothing deleted, nothing cherry-picked.
What I'm watching next is Friday's designations, in that order: Daniels, then the Chargers' practice participation, then the Cleveland forecast. If one of those three breaks clean, I'll have something. If none do, I'll tell you that too.
Keep it fun, keep it 21+ where it's legal, and remember variance gets a vote every week. You know where to find me.
