The loudest thing to happen in the NFL Week 4 takeaways pile this Sunday was not a touchdown. It was a quarterback walking off with a knee injury and a seventh-round rookie jogging on in his place, because Marcus Mariota left Washington's game against the Colts and the Commanders turned to Athan Kaliakmanis.
That is a hard way to spend a Sunday afternoon. One snap you have a veteran who has started playoff games, the next you have a kid whose name most of the league learned about forty minutes ago.
What happened to Marcus Mariota
The word out of Washington is a knee injury, suffered in-game, with Mariota unable to return. I do not have a grade or a timeline in front of me yet, and I am not going to guess at one. Knees get called everything from "day to day" to "season" in the same twelve hours, and the only people who actually know are in a training room right now.
What I do know is the practical part. The Commanders went from a veteran bridge arm to a seventh-rounder in real time, with no practice reps to smooth the landing and no opponent film on the new guy either. That cuts both ways, and the second half of that sentence is the only thing Washington has going for it.
Who is Athan Kaliakmanis and what does Washington do now
Rookie, seventh round, thrown into live NFL football without a warmup. The honest read is that the playbook shrinks. It always does. You lean on the run game, you ask for quick, clean reads, you protect the rookie's eyes and let the defense carry a quarter or two.
checked the almanac: brock purdy was the literal last pick of the 2022 draft, mr. irrelevant, and he was starting for the 49ers by december of that same rookie year after injuries cleared the room in front of him. it happens. it is just not supposed to happen in week 4 with twelve minutes of notice.
That is the wonder beat. Back to business: most of these stories end with the veteran returning and the rookie going back to holding a tablet. A few of them do not. Washington's next few weeks of practice reps will tell you which one this is.
The Eagles lost Lane Johnson before kickoff
Philadelphia's news broke a little over an hour before the Rams game: right tackle Lane Johnson, a surprise inactive for personal reasons. That phrase is where I stop. It is his business, not mine, and the respectful thing is to leave it exactly there.
On the field it is a real subtraction. Johnson has been the steadiest right tackle in football for the better part of a decade, and "surprise inactive" means the Eagles did not get a week of reps to prepare a replacement. Add DeVonta Smith among the inactives and that is a quarterback working without his franchise right tackle and one of his two primary receivers on the same afternoon. Offenses are built as systems. Pull two load-bearing pieces an hour before kickoff and the whole thing leans.
What I'm watching the rest of Week 4
The late window is stacked. Dolphins at Vikings kicks at 4:05, then a 4:25 block with Broncos at 49ers, Chargers at Seahawks and Chiefs at Raiders. Lions at Panthers closes Sunday night, and the Falcons visit the Saints on Monday.
On the human side, Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and his wife announced on Instagram that they are expecting their first child, a video they titled "A Short Love Story." Good news is allowed to just be good news. Congratulations to them.
The number I am tracking into Monday is the one out of Washington: whatever the Commanders say about Mariota's knee, and whether Kaliakmanis takes first-team reps this week. That is the tell for whether this was a scare or a season-shaper.
