Friday in October is the best reading day of the week. Practices are done, the designations are real, and the Sunday board is about to find out what it actually knows. So if you came for NFL best bets today, here is the honest answer at the desk: nothing has cleared. What I have is a list, and a Friday list beats a forced play every single time.

What I'm eyeing for NFL Week 4

  1. Dallas at Houston, Sunday 1:00 ET. Two injury stories tugging the same game in opposite directions. Houston gets Nico Collins back from the hamstring that cost him two games, which hands a winless offense its one true separator. Dallas may debut Joey Porter Jr. at corner, no designation after two full practices since the trade out of Pittsburgh. What turns it into a play: if the pricing still reads Houston as the two-game version that had nobody to throw to, while a corner learning a new scheme on a Wednesday gets full credit.
  1. Tennessee at Baltimore, Sunday 1:00 ET. Trey Hendrickson had surgery on a broken finger and is out. That is Baltimore's best pass rusher, gone, against an offensive line that needed the mercy. Tennessee has been going the wrong way all year, which is exactly why this one needs patience. What turns it into a play: a number that charges full freight for a defense missing its only consistent edge winner.
  1. Los Angeles at Philadelphia, Sunday 1:00 ET. Four moving pieces in one building. DeVonta Smith is out with the lingering hamstring, Zack Baun is out in concussion protocol, Puka Nacua returns from the hip after two missed games, and Aaron Donald sits with back soreness. What turns it into a play: a total that treats Smith's absence as a bigger subtraction than Nacua's return is an addition. Philadelphia down a starting linebacker matters more than the receiver math suggests.
  1. Miami at Minnesota, Sunday 4:05 ET. Justin Jefferson is out with a sprained left ankle, with the coaching staff hopeful for Week 5. That is the single largest one-man subtraction on the slate, and Minnesota is also working through the aftershock of trading J.J. McCarthy to the Giants. What turns it into a play: not much, honestly. This is the most public injury of the week, and public information gets priced first and fastest. I need something stale to be interested.
  1. New England at Buffalo, Sunday 1:00 ET. Christian Gonzalez and Christian Barmore both out, which strips the Patriots of their best cover corner and a disruptive interior body, in Buffalo, against that offense. The experts are unanimous on the winner. That's a tell about sentiment, not about value. What turns it into a play: nothing yet, and I say that with no enthusiasm.

The one I lean on most

Dallas at Houston. A lean, not a play, and I want that distinction in bold. Collins coming back changes what Houston's offense is allowed to attempt, and a winless team with its field-stretcher back is a different animal than a winless team without one. I want to see how much respect that gets before I touch anything.

checked the almanac: derrick henry's 2,027-yard season in 2020 made him the eighth back in league history to clear 2,000, and the wire's right that he and Tennessee have been drifting apart ever since.

What I'm watching next: the Bears naming a starter between Case Keenum and Tyson Bagent, and whether Jalen Coker's quad clears for Carolina on Sunday night. Six injury questions on one slate rewards patience, not volume. Entertainment, variance, 21+ where legal, and if it ever stops being fun, 1-800-GAMBLER is there.

You know where to find me.
