Baker Mayfield is expected to miss three to six weeks, and the reporting says the timeline hinges on one thing: when he can grip a football again. That broke a little after eight this morning Eastern, roughly four and a half hours before Green Bay and Tampa Bay kick at 1:00 p.m. ET, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers odds movement since has been the loudest thing on my board all weekend. A team that opened as a home favorite is now a field-goal-plus dog, and the total got cut by most of a touchdown.

That is not a nudge. That is a market taking a number down, staring at it, and reposting it somewhere else entirely.

What the Baker Mayfield injury actually is

Here is what I have, and I am not going to pretend it is more. Three to six weeks. Recovery tied to grip strength. No body part named in the reporting, no surgical language, no IR designation that has reached me yet.

But the grip detail is the whole story, and it is the part a careful reader should sit with. Nobody frames a quarterback's return around hamstring grip. When the medical staff's checkpoint is whether he can hold a football, you are talking about the throwing apparatus, and those are the injuries that tend to drift toward the back of a published window rather than the front. Three weeks is the optimistic end. Six weeks puts you near midseason.

I also do not have Tampa's starter for this afternoon in front of me, and I am not going to guess at a name to make a paragraph look smarter. What I know is that the Bucs are going from a quarterback who has carried that offense's entire identity to someone who has not, against a Green Bay defense that gets to tee off on an offense installed in a hurry.

checked the almanac: the 1999 Rams lost Trent Green in the preseason and handed it to Kurt Warner, who threw 41 touchdowns and won Super Bowl XXXIV. so it happens. it just does not happen on four hours notice in week 4.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers odds movement: what the board did before noon

This is the section nobody else has. These are my numbers, as of 8:30 a.m. ET.

MarketOpenedNow (8:30 a.m. ET)Move
Packers ML-162-154 (prophetx)8 cents toward GB dogs
Buccaneers ML-141+150 (novig)favorite to +150 dog
Packers spread+1.5 -110-3.5 +100 (fliff)five points
Buccaneers spread+1.5 -120+3 +100 (williamhill_us)flipped sides
Total Over46 -10739 -107 (lowvig)seven points down
Total Under47.5 -11038.5 -102 (draftkings)nine points down

The opening numbers across my books do not perfectly agree with each other, which is what happens when a market gets pulled and reposted in a hurry on a Sunday morning. Fine. Direction and size are what matter, and both are enormous. Tampa went from laying a price at home to catching one. The spread swung five points. The total got hacked by seven to nine depending on where you look.

The prediction venues are nodding along. Kalshi has Green Bay at 63 percent and Tampa at 42, Polymarket 61 and 40. Clean that up and you land near 60/40 Green Bay, which is almost exactly what -154 implies. When the exchanges and the books agree inside a point, there is no disagreement left to harvest. That is a tell, and the tell says the news is fully in the price.

One thing is not settled: the key number. I have Green Bay -3.5 at one shop and Tampa +3 at another, and that half point sitting on top of 3 is the most valuable real estate in football. The board has not decided whether this is a field goal game or more than a field goal game. Mind the gap like it owes you money.

Did the market overreact to the Mayfield news?

My honest read: the spread move is defensible, the total move is where I start raising an eyebrow.

Five points of spread for a starting quarterback going down a few hours before kickoff is aggressive but inside the range of sane. Late news gets punished harder than Wednesday news, because the backup had no game-week reps as the starter and the game plan is being rewritten in a hotel ballroom. The market is paying for chaos, not just for talent.

The total is the one I keep circling. Seven to nine points off a number is a staggering reaction, and it bakes in a specific picture: Tampa cannot move the ball at all, and Green Bay gets a comfortable enough lead to run clock in the fourth. That is one outcome. It is not the only one. The other version is Green Bay going up two scores early, Tampa throwing it forty times out of necessity, and a lot of garbage-time yardage turning a 38.5 into a sweaty 38.5. A backup quarterback does not reduce plays. Sometimes he increases them.

So my lean, and I am calling it a lean and not a play because I do not have the inactives yet: the over at 39 interests me more than either side of the spread. I am not touching the Buccaneers moneyline at +150 on faith. Faith is not a handicap.

The thing that kills my lean is weather I do not have and a Tampa game plan built entirely around handing the ball off and hiding the quarterback. If the forecast is ugly or if the backup's resume screams checkdowns, the under was right and I was late. That is an honest caveat, not a hedge.

The rest of the Sunday injury board

Two more things worth your attention this morning, with no number story attached because the news is the news. Washington's Terry McLaurin is inactive against Indianapolis with a hamstring issue suffered in Friday's practice, which is a real subtraction from that passing game in the 9:30 a.m. ET London window. And the word out of Los Angeles is that the Rams do not intend to limit Puka Nacua's workload against Philadelphia. The second one matters as much as the first. A full workload designation on a volume receiver going into a divisional-caliber road test is the kind of detail that changes how you project an entire offense.

What I'm watching before the 1:00 p.m. kick

Three things, in order.

First, the inactives. Who is actually taking snaps for Tampa Bay, and whether there is a third quarterback elevated behind him. That answer moves my opinion on the total more than any line move will.

Second, that half point on 3. If Green Bay -3.5 gets bought back to -3 across the board, the market is telling you the early reaction was a half point too far and the sharp money leaned Tampa. If Tampa's +3 disappears and everything settles at +3.5 or higher, the money agreed with the panic. Either way, the board will tell on itself by noon.

Third, whether the total finds a floor at 38.5 or keeps bleeding. A number that stops moving is a number that found its level. A number that keeps dripping has more news behind it that I have not seen yet.

None of this is a reason to force something before kickoff. Sundays come every week, the board reprints every week, and the edges that last are the small ones taken calmly. This is entertainment with variance attached, 21+ where legal, and if it ever stops being entertainment, 1-800-GAMBLER is a real phone number with real people on the other end.

I will be at the desk when the inactives post. You know where to find me.
