The Philadelphia 76ers odds movement for tonight's preseason opener against the Knicks is as violent as anything you will see on a board in October: New York opened as a small underdog at +1.5 and now sits at -4.5. That is a six-point swing on one piece of news. LeBron James will not take the court for Philadelphia's first preseason game.
The moneyline tells the same story in a different language. New York opened +102 and is now -162 at DraftKings. Philadelphia opened -127 and is now +150 at BetRivers. That is not a book shading a number. That is a market re-rating a team.
Here is the part I find more interesting than the side. The total held. It opened 226.5 and sits at 227.5 over -105 at FanDuel, with BetRivers still posting the under back at 226.5. A six-point move on the spread and a point of drift on the total means the money read this as a redistribution of possessions, not a slowdown. Somebody else in Philadelphia is going to take those shots, and in a preseason opener, that usually means more bodies, more pace, and the same arithmetic in the aggregate.
The honest caveat, and it is a big one: this is a preseason game. Rotation minutes are a rumor until tip, I do not have the rest of Philadelphia's availability list in front of me, and the starters we do see may play twelve minutes and go sit down. Preseason sides are the softest numbers of the calendar precisely because nobody, including the people posting them, knows who is playing the fourth quarter.
And the move is already in. Six points of it. Grabbing the Knicks at -4.5 now is paying full retail for news the market digested hours ago. There is a price-shopping note worth flagging: BetRivers still shows Philadelphia -1.5 at +175, which is the same number repriced rather than moved, and that kind of divergence between books in preseason is normal, not a gift.
I am not finding a number here I want. Nothing cleared my line on this one.
What I am watching: whether the Knicks number pushes through -5 before 7:00 pm ET, and whether that total finally follows the side. If the market was right about the possessions, it will not.
