Preseason is a weird little window. The games don't count, the rotations are half-real, and somehow the whole league still finds a way to generate storylines by noon. That's today. Nothing has cleared my number yet, but a few things are sitting on the radar before the games tip.

NBA odds today, before anything's live

  1. Timberwolves @ Pacers, tonight. ESPN's BPI has Minnesota projected for 48 wins and a 95.5 percent playoff probability off a 49-33 finish and a Western Conference semifinal run last year. That's a strong vote of confidence for a roster that's changed. What turns this into something I'd actually price: a couple weeks of real minutes data once the games count, not preseason run-outs. Projections built on last year's team aren't the same as a number on this year's team.
  1. Boston's title odds, cooling. The BPI has the Celtics with a surprising number given they were the East favorite a year ago. The obvious reason sits in plain sight: Boston lost its best player to an Achilles tear in last year's playoffs, and a model that prices health risk is going to discount a team still working its way back. That's not a knock, it's just the math reading the injury report the same way I would. Watch the real health updates, not the preseason minutes, before this number means anything.
  1. Bucks @ Thunder, tonight. Oklahoma City is the defending champion, and this is the kind of exhibition game that tells you more about rotation shape than about a spread. Checked the almanac: these two conferences haven't crossed paths in the Finals since June, when the Thunder beat Indiana for the title. Nothing to bet on here yet, just a pace and depth-chart look before the games that count.
  1. The Breen, LeBron, Embiid thing. A broadcaster apologized for a story James has since disputed about Embiid showing up late. This is locker room noise, the kind that means everything for a group chat and nothing for a line. I'm not touching it and neither should you, there's no number attached and there shouldn't be.

The one I lean on, and it's a lean, not a play: Minnesota-Indiana tonight. Not because I've got a number, I don't yet, but because a team getting priced at 48 wins before a single real game tips is exactly the kind of storyline that either holds up fast or gets corrected fast. I'll have more once actual minutes and a real injury report exist to price against.

Nothing cleared this morning. That's fine, that's most mornings. The math says pass until a real number shows up, and I'd rather tell you that straight than dress up a hunch as an edge. You know where to find me when something does.
