My board is empty, and on the last day of September that is the correct answer. The NBA betting news today is quotes, light shooting, and depth charts. None of that clears a number. All of it decides which numbers I get to attack in three weeks.
So this is a radar column. Nothing here is a play. These are the five things I have circled in the notebook, and what each one would have to do to graduate.
What I'm eyeing before the NBA season numbers firm up
- Philadelphia's paper superteam. The reporting has LeBron James and Jaylen Brown in Sixers uniforms, and the write-ups all land on the same phrase: on paper, nearly unbeatable. On paper. Meanwhile a national TV analyst spent his segment explaining that he does not even have Philly in his top six in the East. Both of those things are in print on the same day. That gap is enormous, and gaps that wide usually mean somebody is pricing vibes. What turns it into a play: a clean look at rotations and closing lineups, then a comparison against my own East projections. I don't have a number I trust yet.
- Tyrese Maxey's framing. Coming off a career year, he said he wants to be judged by winning, not by his individual numbers. Every reporter in that room heard a leadership quote. I heard usage. A guard who just put up a career year, now sharing the floor with two high-usage stars, is a math problem before he is a storyline. What turns it into a play: preseason usage and touch distribution that disagrees with where his season-long scoring markets get set.
- Brandon Ingram's heel. He got in light shooting and court work before Clippers practice in Hawai'i, recovering from heel surgery. Light work is not a timeline, it is a hello. Heel and foot rehabs are the ones I respect most, because the calendar lies and the soft-tissue setbacks arrive in November. What turns it into a play: full-contact practice, then a second week of full contact with no walk-back.
- The minutes nobody is arguing about. Ajay Mitchell and Ayo Dosunmu are showing up on sleeper lists. Fantasy drafters and prop markets read the exact same depth chart, and the fantasy crowd usually reads it first. What turns it into a play: preseason rotations that hand one of them real minutes before the market notices.
- Las Vegas. Word came down that expansion bids are down to three finalists. Not a betting item. A league item, and a big one. I just like knowing where the map is headed.
The one I lean on most
Philadelphia, and it is a lean, not a play. When a roster reads unbeatable to one desk and outside the top six to another, the truth is usually somewhere in between and the price usually is not. I want two weeks of watching who finishes games before I put a dollar behind an opinion.
checked the almanac while a Jordan Game 3 jersey from the 1998 Finals went for a record number: that is the game the Jazz scored 54 points. the lowest-scoring game in finals history, and now the shirt is an asset class.
What I'm watching next is the first credible full-contact practice report on Ingram, and the first Sixers preseason lineup that tells me who actually closes. Nothing cleared my number today, and I am not going to invent one. This stays entertainment with variance, 21+ where it's legal.
