Here is the answer before the preamble: nothing cleared my board this morning, so the honest version of NBA best bets today is a watchlist, not a slate. Three games across two nights, one scrimmage in Philadelphia that drew more foot traffic than some regular season Tuesdays, and a pile of information I simply do not have yet.
That is early October for you. The teams know more than anybody outside the building does, and everybody outside the building knows more than they did last week. That gap closes fast. I would rather wait for it to close than guess at the shape of it.
What I'm eyeing
- Philadelphia, and the fit question nobody can answer yet. The reporting out of Philly has fans queued ten deep just to watch a scrimmage, which tells you how much curiosity LeBron James and Jaylen Brown have poured into that gym. James called it a great first step. That is exactly the right temperature for a first step, and I respect a man who refuses to oversell his own hype. What turns this into something I can price: rotation shape, who actually initiates offense, and whether the staggering of those two is a real plan or a courtesy. Scrimmage buzz is not data. Minutes patterns are.
- Miami at Toronto, 7:00 ET. First live basketball on my screen. I am not watching the scoreboard, I am watching leashes: who comes back after halftime, who sits in a suit, how deep each bench goes before the floor turns into a tryout. That is the tell that makes the next one handicappable.
- Utah at Denver, Sunday 7:10 ET. Altitude is the oldest edge in this league and also the most thoroughly chewed over. What interests me is tempo, not elevation: a young, fast team walking into Denver's building and deciding whether to run with it or get dragged into the halfcourt. A clean pace read turns this into a conversation.
- Golden State at the Clippers, Sunday 7:10 ET. Two rosters I want to see move before I say one syllable about either of them. Last year's shapes are not this year's shapes, and October is where that gets proven or disproven.
The one I lean on
Miami at Toronto, and I want to be precise about the word lean. It is a lean, not a play. Early October basketball tends to be short-leash basketball, which drags tempo and scoring in directions that have nothing to do with how good either team is. That is a tendency, not a number, and a tendency without a number is a hunch wearing a nice shirt. Mind the gap like it owes you money, but do not pay it until it shows you the receipt.
So: nothing cleared my number today. Not a bad morning, just an early one. Small edges over and over, no heroics, and none of the small edges are on the table yet.
What I'm watching next is Philadelphia's rotation, specifically how those first units get built once the games count for something. That is the first real information of this season, and I want it before I have an opinion worth charging admission for.
Keep it entertainment, keep it 21+ where legal, and remember variance does not care how good the read was.
You know where to find me.
