The NBA 2026-27 preseason opened not with a game but with an inventory: the biggest question facing all 30 teams, laid out in a row. Two of them jump off the page. LeBron James' fit in Philadelphia, and Kawhi Leonard's return to Toronto. Sit with that pairing for a second.
I don't have the full terms of either situation in front of me yet, so I'm not going to pretend to know how the Toronto piece was built. What I know is what the framing tells me, and the framing alone is enough to reorganize how you think about the East. LeBron has now been the central question of four different franchises, going back to Cleveland in 2003, then Miami, then Cleveland again, then Los Angeles. Every stop got the same treatment. Who defers, who initiates, who guards the other team's best wing in April. Philadelphia is just the newest room asking it.
Checked the almanac, and the symmetry here is almost too neat. The last time these two names really collided, it was the 2019 Eastern Conference semifinals, Game 7 in Toronto, Kawhi rising over Joel Embiid at the buzzer with a shot that bounced around the rim before it fell. Toronto went on to win the title. Kawhi left for the Clippers that summer. Philadelphia spent years relitigating that one possession. Now one of them is back in that building's colors and the other is wearing the jersey he beat.
What comes next is the boring, essential part: bodies and minutes. Kawhi's career has always been a conversation about availability rather than ability, and Toronto's whole plan bends around how much of him there is. Philadelphia's question is spacing and pecking order, which sounds like a coaching problem until you watch a fourth quarter and realize it's a personality problem. Preseason won't answer either. It'll only show you the shape of the answer.
The fantasy rooms are already re-sorting their draft boards over all this, which is its own kind of tell about how much the league moved this summer.
What I'm watching next: the first lineup card Philadelphia turns in with LeBron on it, and how many of Toronto's early minutes Kawhi actually plays.
