Four division series openers, four road-or-home verdicts that already reshaped October, and the loudest one came off a steel beam. The Brewers lead the Padres 1-0 after a 3-2 Game 1 in which the American Family Field roof got in the way of what San Diego thought was a go-ahead home run in the ninth and turned it into an out instead. That is the MLB betting news today that actually changes how I model a series. Game 2 is at 4:00 PM ET in Milwaukee.

Let me be plain about why that matters beyond the highlight. Milwaukee was 103-59 and won the NL Central; San Diego was 91-71 and finished second in the West. On talent and on record, the Brewers were supposed to be the better side. They are. But they needed a building to help them win the opener by a run, and San Diego walked out of a hostile park having outplayed the better team for most of nine innings. The Padres are not a dead series. They are a live one.

What happened in Brewers vs Padres Game 1

A 3-2 game that was still breathing in the ninth usually means both managers went deep into the back of their bullpen, and that is the mechanism I care about most heading into a 4:00 PM first pitch with no travel day in between. Short rest for high-leverage arms is the quietest edge in postseason baseball and the one markets are slowest to price. Who is unavailable at 4 ET tells you more about Game 2 than anything either lineup did Saturday.

The rest of the overnight

Tampa Bay was the most complete performance of the night. Drew Rasmussen was nearly perfect, Bryan Baker finished it, and the Yankees managed one hit all evening. New York goes back out Monday at 8:00 PM ET in Tampa facing a team that just proved it can take the bat out of their hands entirely.

checked the almanac: roy halladay threw a no-hitter in the 2010 nlds opener against the reds, his first career postseason start. one hit is not that. it is close enough to make a yankees fan stare at the ceiling.

Chicago's 3-0 win in Cleveland came the old way: a Munetaka Murakami two-run homer and five pitchers combining on a three-hitter. The Guardians got three hits and no runs at home, and they get Game 2 Monday at 5:10 PM ET.

Los Angeles handled Atlanta 5-3 behind Tarik Skubal, who gave up one run in six innings. The Dodgers also carried outfield prospect Josue De Paula onto the NLDS roster, three weeks after his big league debut. That is a roster built to win now with a bench spot used on upside. Braves and Dodgers go again at 8:00 PM ET.

Elsewhere, Nationals catcher Francisco Rivero and free agent pitcher Raudi Perez were each suspended 56 games following positive tests for a performance-enhancing substance under baseball's minor league drug programs.

MLB best bets today: what cleared

Nothing cleared my number this morning, and I am not going to dress up a shrug as analysis. Two series games on the slate, both with the better regular-season team already up 1-0, and both with bullpen questions I cannot answer until lineups and availability are public. Small edges over and over is the business. Manufactured ones are how you donate.

The honest version: my Game 2 work in Milwaukee hinges almost entirely on who is live out of each pen after a one-run ninth. Until I know that, the math says pass.

What I'm watching next

Pen availability for the 4:00 PM ET game in Milwaukee, whether Atlanta's bats show any sign of life against Dodger pitching in the 8:00 PM ET window, and how New York answers Monday night in Tampa after being held to one hit. Bet for entertainment, 21+ where legal, and if it stops being fun, 1-800-GAMBLER is there.
