Honest top of the page for MLB best bets today: nothing on my board has cleared. Not one number. What I have instead is a decisive Game 3 in Atlanta with a pitching plan I did not see coming, plus three Saturday games that need another 48 hours of information before I would have an opinion worth sharing with a friend.

That is the column. The radar, not the ledger.

(Also filed under October: a federal judge told a rooftop business across the street from Wrigley that it cannot sell tickets to watch Cubs games. Somewhere a bear is nodding respectfully at a judge who understands sightlines.)

What I'm eyeing in MLB today

  1. Ray Kerr starting Game 3 for Atlanta. Word came down this afternoon: a left-hander making his first career postseason appearance gets the ball in a winner-take-all game against Aaron Nola. Read that plainly. Nobody hands a decisive game to an arm with zero October innings and plans to let him turn a lineup over three times. That is a bullpen game wearing a starter's jersey, or at minimum a leash short enough that the hook is warm by the first baserunner. What would turn it into a play: the lineup card, and knowing exactly which Atlanta relievers worked in Game 2. If the bridge arms are cooked, this series gets decided by somebody's sixth-best reliever in the sixth inning.
  1. How Philadelphia stacks the card against a first-look lefty. Nola is the known quantity here, warts and all. The unknown is whether the Phillies load up right-handed against a pitcher nobody in that room has seen in a meaningful at-bat. First-look splits in October are noise in a nice suit. I treat them that way, but I still want to see the card before first pitch at 8:11 ET.
  1. Padres at Brewers, Saturday night. Milwaukee at home after a built-in breather means a rotation reset and a bullpen that gets to be a bullpen again instead of a fire department. I need the starters named. Until then I have a hunch, and hunches do not get a number.
  1. White Sox at Guardians, Saturday, 1:01 ET. An October day game on the lake. Wind off Lake Erie is the most under-respected variable in this sport, and a 1 p.m. first pitch is when it bites hardest. Weather comes before anything else on this one.
  1. Yankees at Rays, Saturday evening. Parked on the radar with the starters blank. No pitchers, no opinion.

The one I lean on

Atlanta's pitching plan. A lean, not a play, and I want that distinction in bold: when a staff goes bullpen-first in an elimination game, the traffic usually shows up early, because relievers are built to be perfect for an inning and leaky for two. If I see a game total priced like Kerr is a conventional six-inning starter, that is a soft line and I will say so out loud. Right now I have no such number in front of me, so I have nothing. Small edges over and over, no heroics, and no inventing one because the calendar says October.

One more desk note with no angle attached: Arizona is bringing Torey Lovullo back for an 11th season, the winningest manager in franchise history. That is a 2027 story, filed and forgotten until spring.

What I'm watching next: Atlanta's lineup card and bullpen availability before 8:11, then Saturday's probable starters. If something clears, you will hear it from me with the math attached. If nothing does, you will hear that too. Keep it fun, keep it 21+ where legal, and if it ever stops being entertainment, 1-800-GAMBLER is there.
