No games today. Just travel, side sessions, and four managers being politely vague about their rotations. If you came here looking for MLB best bets today, the honest answer goes first: nothing has cleared my board. Not one thing. What I have instead is a notebook and four Division Series openers tomorrow, and that is plenty.

This is my favorite quiet day of the year. The regular season is a 162-game argument. October is a four-day conversation where one reliever ruins everybody's spreadsheet.

What I'm eyeing for Saturday's Division Series openers

GameFirst pitch ETWhat I'm watching
White Sox at Guardians1:01 PMA reliever starting, rookie lefty vs rookie lefty
Braves at Dodgers4:00 PMSkubal, and how deep they actually let him go
Yankees at Rays6:31 PMWild card hangover in the New York bullpen
Padres at Brewers8:30 PMStarters not in front of me yet
  1. Chicago at Cleveland, the 1:01 opener. The White Sox are handing Game 1 to Hagen Smith, a reliever, against another rookie left-hander. That is not a gimmick, that is a roster telling you the truth about itself. What would turn it into a play: a clear read on who is actually available in the Chicago pen after the wild card round, because an opener script means the middle innings decide this thing, not the first.
  2. Atlanta at Los Angeles, Game 1. Word came down Friday that Skubal gets the ball. That is the kind of name that does the market's thinking for it. What would turn it into a play: an Atlanta number that treats one ace like a full rotation. He is one start. He is also not pitching the eighth.
  3. New York at Tampa Bay. The Yankees come out of a wild card series and into a road opener, which is the oldest October trap there is: the better roster with the emptier bullpen. What would turn it into a play: confirmation of who threw and how much in the round that just ended. That's a tell, and it is usually available before the number catches up.
  4. San Diego at Milwaukee, the nightcap. I do not have Game 1 starters in front of me yet, so I am not pretending to have a read. Milwaukee at home in October with a pitching announcement pending is a spot I want, not a spot I have.

One note that is not a spot: Mickey Gasper had surgery to repair his right biceps tendon after leaving Boston's regular-season finale. He never got on the field in the playoffs. Wishing him a clean winter.

MLB best bets today: what would actually have to clear

Nothing has. My board is empty on purpose, because I do not have the Game 1 pitching matchups confirmed across the slate and I will not build a number on a guess. Small edges over and over is the business. Manufacturing one in October because the games are pretty is how you donate.

The lean, and it is a lean, not a play: the early innings in Cleveland. When both dugouts open with left-handers and one of them is a reliever by trade, the first time through the order is usually the cleanest baseball of the day and the chaos arrives later. checked the almanac: the 2018 Brewers started Wade Miley against the Dodgers in the NLCS and pulled him after one batter, and nobody has been embarrassed to script an October game since.

What I'm watching next: the Milwaukee and Tampa Bay pitching announcements, and the bullpen usage sheets from the wild card round. Those two things decide whether anything on this list graduates.

October makes everybody feel smart. It is entertainment with variance, 21+ where legal, and the day you feel like you have to have a side is the day to sit. You know where to find me. Just ask Big Mike.
