Sunday night in October, Braves and Dodgers in Los Angeles, and the pitching plan moved before anybody threw a warmup pitch. That is the whole mood of the day right there.

So here is the honest top of MLB best bets today: nothing has cleared my number. The one positive price I own is worth about a third of a percent, which is less of an edge and more of a rounding error wearing a jersey. I am still going to tell you what is on the radar, because the radar is the job and the plays are just what survives it.

What I'm eyeing in MLB best bets today

  1. Braves at Dodgers, 8:00 PM ET. The reporting says Atlanta adjusted and gave Game 2 to Ray Kerr, with Chris Sale pushed back to Game 3. Nobody shuffles a Game 2 starter in October for the fun of it. That is a tell about how Atlanta wants the middle of this series to look. What would turn it into a play: a total priced like Atlanta is running a conventional starter's night out there when the plan may say otherwise. The number has to come to me.
  1. Sale in Game 3. The downstream half of the same decision, and the more interesting half. Moving your best arm back a day buys you a better look later and costs you tonight. I want the Game 3 matchup confirmed on both sides before I have an opinion worth printing. Right now I have intent, not a lineup card.
  1. Atlanta's bullpen usage tonight. If Game 2 turns into a long relief night, every number after it changes shape, and the team that burns four arms on Sunday is a different team on Monday. This is the quiet one nobody prices until it is too late.
  1. Monday's two. White Sox at Guardians, 5:10 PM ET. Yankees at Rays, 8:00 PM ET. I have start times and nothing else yet. No arms announced, no read. I am not going to pretend a first pitch time is analysis.

checked the almanac: october 4, 1955, johnny podres shut out the yankees 2-0 in game 7 and brooklyn won the only world series title it ever won in brooklyn. seventy-one years to the day, that franchise is in los angeles hosting a game 2. baseball keeps strange receipts.

The one I lean on, and why it's only a lean

Milwaukee's moneyline against San Diego is the only thing on my card with a plus sign next to it. I have it offered at -127 against a fair -128. That is a positive expectation of about a third of a percent.

I want to be very plain about what that is. The gap between -127 and my fair number does not owe me money. It owes me a nickel. It is a lean because the math leans, not because I have conviction, and if that price ticks the wrong way it is a pass without a second thought. At -120 or better, now we are having a real conversation.

That is the shape of the whole day. Small edges, no heroics, and the patience to let most of the board go by untouched.

What I'm watching next: Atlanta's reliever count tonight, and the Game 3 matchup once both sides post. Bet entertainment money, not rent money, 21 and up where it is legal, and if it ever stops being fun, 1-800-GAMBLER is there for a reason.

You know where to find me. Just ask Big Mike.
