Milwaukee is one win away from the World Series, and the board already knows it.
The Brewers beat the Dodgers 6-2 on Wednesday night in Game 3 of the NLCS, breaking a tie in the seventh when Jake Bauers and Garrett Mitchell went back to back off Blake Snell. That is a 3-0 series lead. Game 4 is tonight at Dodger Stadium, 8 p.m. ET, and Milwaukee Brewers odds today reflect exactly what you'd expect from a team that hasn't trailed in this series yet: they're the live favorite to finish it.
Here's the part that should scare Los Angeles more than the final score did. Shohei Ohtani, hitting .150 this postseason, got dropped to sixth in the batting order for Game 3. That's not a schedule quirk. That's a manager running out of patience with his best player, and it's a tell about where this lineup actually is right now: shorter on answers than the record says it should be.
Can the Dodgers really come back from 0-3?
I checked the almanac on this one because the number is almost too clean to believe. Exactly one team in major league history has ever come back from down 0-3 in a best-of-seven: the 2004 Red Sox, who did it to the Yankees in the ALCS. Every other club in that spot, across more than a century of postseason baseball, has lost. That's the math the Dodgers are actually playing against tonight, not just Freddy Peralta or whoever Milwaukee runs out there.
What's happening in the ALCS
The other half of the board is a lot calmer. Rays and Guardians are tied 1-1 heading into Game 3 today in Cleveland, and that game already got weird before a pitch was thrown: MLB moved the start time up five hours, from evening to 1 p.m. ET, because of incoming weather. Worth knowing if you're watching live, worth knowing if you're watching the total move with it.
Cleveland is sending Gavin Williams, who threw 210 pitches across six days against the White Sox to get here. That's a short-rest workload that usually shows up somewhere, whether it's pitch count tonight or bullpen fatigue in Game 4 on Friday. Tampa Bay counters with Griffin Jax. The wire has the Guardians as the favorite in this one, which is a mild surprise given what Williams has already been through this month, and it's the one thread in the ALCS I'd actually watch move.
| Series | Status | Today's Game | Starters |
|---|---|---|---|
| NLCS | Brewers lead 3-0 | Game 4, 8 p.m. ET | TBD |
| ALCS | Tied 1-1 | Game 3, 1 p.m. ET (moved up) | Williams (CLE) vs. Jax (TB) |
What I'm watching
Two things. First, whether the Dodgers make any further lineup moves beyond dropping Ohtani, because a team adjusting its best hitter's spot in back-to-back games is a team that knows the clock is real. Second, whether Williams' short rest shows up as an early exit in Cleveland, because if the Guardians' pen has to cover five or six outs today, that bullpen note follows them straight into Friday's Game 4.
Nothing graded on my end yet today, nothing cherry-picked, nothing to report there. The bigger story is just that one league is a lot closer to finished than the other.
