Atlanta is still playing baseball. The Braves beat the Phillies 6-2 Thursday night in the decisive Game 3 of the NL Wild Card Series, and that result ends a drought that had grown teeth: it is the franchise's first postseason series win since the 2021 World Series.

The shape of it was very Braves. Three home runs did the damage, the kind of offense that does not need traffic or a rally or a friendly scorer, just somebody squaring one up. Then the ninth inning stopped being an inning and started being a decision. Chris Sale came out of the bullpen on one day of rest and recorded the last four outs of Philadelphia's season.

That is the part worth sitting with. An ace in relief, short rest, four outs, in a game the loser goes home. There is no version of that where the manager is managing anything but the moment in front of him. Sale is not a guy you spend lightly, and Atlanta spent him anyway. That's a tell about how this group was reading its own season.

checked the almanac: the last time sale got asked to finish something this size, it was the 2018 world series, red sox out of the bullpen in game five, machado swinging through a slider to end it. he's done this before. it is still startling every time.

Four straight Octobers came and went after 2021 without a series win attached to them, and the Braves spent most of that stretch being described as better than their postseason results. Thursday does not erase any of that. It just changes the sentence from "what happened to them" to "what happens next."

What happens next is Los Angeles. Atlanta is at the Dodgers on Saturday at 4:00 PM ET, and the Braves arrive having already emptied a drawer they would normally keep shut. Sale's four outs were worth every bit of what they bought, but they were not free, and a division series is a longer walk than a three-game sprint.

For Philadelphia, it is over, and it is over early again. Three games, one night, a winter to answer for it.

I'll be watching how Atlanta lines up its first two games in LA, because the shape of that answer tells you exactly how much Thursday cost.
