Late october in this league usually means exit interviews and offseason power rankings. Not this year. The Valkyries are two wins from a title in their second season of existence, while the league office is running warm, fuzzy season recap reels for Indiana and Dallas like a eulogy for teams that just watched someone else take the parade route. That contrast, one franchise closing in on history while two others pack it in for the winter, is the whole mood of the board right now.
Here's what's actually on my radar before Thursday.
WNBA Finals odds today
- Golden State at Atlanta, Game 6, Thursday, 12:30 PM ET: Golden State took Game 5 and the series number moved with it, from plus-225 to minus-260 to win the title in the span of two games. That's a real swing, not a market shrug. What turns this into something I'd touch is the actual game-level number out of Atlanta, not just the series price to win it all. Elimination road favorites carry their own tell, closeout games tend to play tighter than the raw talent gap suggests, and I want to see where that number lands once Atlanta's desperation gets priced in.
- The total in a closeout environment: teams facing elimination at home usually don't speed the game up, they slow it down and hunt every possession. If the total settles near where it's traded through the series, fine. If it drops purely on elimination-game logic without accounting for who's actually healthy and rotating big minutes, that's a soft number worth a second look.
- Veronica Burton's defensive footprint: four total blocks in Game 5 put her in company with Diana Taurasi, the only other guard with four blocks in a single WNBA Finals game, going back to October 2009. Checked the almanac, that's rarified air for a guard. If a prop market hasn't caught up to what she's doing defensively, I want to see the price before it does.
The lean, not a play: I like Golden State's position in this series, the talent gap and the way the last two games have gone. But I don't have the Game 6 number in front of me yet, and a series-to-win-it-all price isn't a game bet. Nothing clears my own number until I see what Atlanta draws as a desperate home side Thursday.
None of this is a pick. It's the board before the board exists, the stuff I'm tracking so I'm not starting cold once real lines post. You know where to find me when the numbers show up. BOL.
