Saturday in mid-October is a weird little pocket of the calendar. The real slate doesn't start for days, preseason box scores are still trickling in, and most of what's moving is noise, not numbers. I like this part of the year anyway. This is when you find out who's actually hurt, who's actually mad, and who's actually ready, before any of it gets priced.

Nothing below is a play. This is the list I'm building before the board has anything worth grabbing.

philadelphia 76ers betting news: what the frontcourt moves mean

  1. The Tacko Fall signing. Philadelphia converted the 7-foot-6 center to a two-way deal because the frontcourt is thin behind Joel Embiid right now, not because they found a hidden rotation piece. Why I'm watching: a team converting size off the street in mid-October is telling you something about its depth chart, not its ceiling. Turns into a play when Embiid's minutes restriction or a frontcourt injury actually shows up on the injury report ahead of a real game and the total or spread reacts to it.
  1. Embiid and James logging preseason-high minutes together. The 76ers closed the preseason with a loss to Boston, and coach Nick Nurse said the group is still finding its rhythm. VJ Edgecombe sat that one out. Why I'm watching: this is the clearest glimpse of the rotation we're going to get before Philadelphia opens at the Knicks on Tuesday. Turns into a play once Edgecombe's status firms up and I can see the actual starting five that will be on the floor.
  1. The Durant and Ishbia back-and-forth in Phoenix. Durant publicly pushed back on the owner's framing of his time with the Suns. Why I'm watching: public friction between a franchise's best player and the man who signs the checks is a locker room tell worth filing away, even with no game attached to it yet. Turns into a play only if it ever shows up in how Phoenix is actually priced for the season, and right now it hasn't moved a thing.
  1. How Boston looked beating Philadelphia 125-120 in that preseason finale. The Celtics were sharp enough to close it out on the road. Why I'm watching: that carries directly into their trip to Detroit Tuesday as a first real form line on both clubs heading into the year.

the one i lean on

If I had to pick the spot with the most real information behind it, it's the 76ers rotation question into the Knicks game. There's an actual date, an actual injury name in Edgecombe, and an actual coach on record saying the group isn't settled. That's a lean, not a play. I want to see the final injury report before I'd touch anything tied to it.

Nothing has cleared a real number for me yet today, and I'd rather tell you that than dress up a hunch as an edge. Mind the gap like it owes you money. I'll be back once something does. You know where to find me.
