Opening weekend was supposed to be about fresh legs and new jerseys. Instead the loudest story out of the league right now isn't a box score, it's a phishing email. Madison Square Garden sent a fake championship-ring claim link to its own employees as an internal test, several staffers got burned by it, and now Knicks assistant coaches are standing around with empty ring boxes while the rest of the building gets roasted on every pregame show. Dolan's people are calling it an unfortunate mistake. The team still has to play basketball tonight at Boston. That's the job.

So before anything clears on my board this early in a season, here's what's actually on my radar.

NBA Picks Today: The Eyeing List

  1. Warriors on a true back-to-back. Golden State hosts Memphis tonight, then flies to Phoenix for Saturday. Early-season back-to-backs are a scheduling quirk coaches hate, and the usual response is to cap starter minutes the night before a quick turnaround. I want to see how heavy Golden State's rotation runs tonight. Heavy minutes for the vets turns Saturday into a tired-legs fade candidate.
  1. Spurs and Rockets, both on zero rest by Saturday. San Antonio hosts Houston tonight, then both teams play again the next night, Spurs at Dallas and Rockets at Atlanta. Two teams absorbing a back-to-back off the same building, same night is the kind of early scheduling spot that shows who's actually in game shape. Pace and foul totals from tonight tell me more about Saturday than anything else will.
  1. Pelicans at altitude on no rest. New Orleans plays Utah tonight, then turns right around for Denver on Saturday. Altitude plus zero rest is one of the oldest, most reliable fade mechanisms in this sport. It just needs the schedule to cooperate, and this weekend it does.
  1. Heat's quick turn. Miami hosts Detroit tonight, then travels to Charlotte for Saturday. Shorter trip than the others, but still a bench-usage tell worth clocking before Saturday.
  1. Knicks at Boston with a new face. New York just added Dalton Knecht on a two-way, fresh off being let go by the Lakers, while the organization absorbs a week of ring-box headlines. No number here yet, this one's pure storyline: how a roster handles noise on the road against a conference rival.

The One I Lean On

Of that group, the Pelicans' back-to-back into Denver's altitude is the one with real legs. It's the cleanest mechanism on the board this weekend, tired legs plus altitude plus a second night, and it's shown up before. Nothing has cleared my number on it yet. This is a lean, not a play. I want to see how New Orleans' rotation looks against Utah tonight before I put my name on anything this weekend.

What I'm watching next: tonight's minutes and pace for Golden State, San Antonio, Houston, and New Orleans, because those four games write Saturday's story before Saturday tips off.

You know where to find me if any of this actually clears. The Read, not a tip. Mind the gap like it owes you money. BOL.
