Media day is the one day a year the whole league tells you what it believes about itself, and my job is to write down which parts I can actually price later. Nothing clears today. Nothing should. But the NBA betting news today gave me four rotation puzzles worth carrying in the notebook, and one of them is genuinely strange.

What I'm eyeing in the NBA betting news today

  1. Portland's four-headed backcourt. Damian Lillard, Ja Morant, Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson, all on one roster, and Lillard's answer was that it "will work itself out." Maybe it does. Basketball games are still 48 minutes long, and that math is unkind to somebody. What turns this into a play is preseason minutes distribution and who closes. Until I see a closing five twice, I'm treating every Portland number as a guess wearing a nice suit.
  1. The Clippers after the penalty. They opened media day by apologizing to fans following the salary cap circumvention investigation, Kawhi Leonard is a Raptor again, and Brandon Ingram will miss the start of the season while he recovers from surgery on a right heel injury and a partially torn Achilles. That is a real absence from a team already rebuilt on the fly. I want to see who holds the ball in his place before I have any opinion on this roster at all.
  1. Tyrese Haliburton, no restrictions. He says there's no minutes cap coming off more than a year away with a torn Achilles. Said with total confidence, which is how every one of these starts. The tell I'm hunting is whether Indiana actually plays him in both ends of a back-to-back early, because "no restrictions" in September and "no restrictions" in November are different sentences.
  1. Giannis in Miami. He says he can still dominate the game, and I'm not going to be the bear who argues. What I don't know yet is what an overhauled Heat team looks like in pace and shot profile with him as the engine. Totals markets in October are always a little soft on teams that changed their identity over the summer. That's where I'd look first, once I have a real possession number to look at.

One more, and not as a betting item: Kristaps Porzingis will miss the start of Warriors camp with a health issue. I don't put numbers on a man's health. Hope he's alright.

The one I lean on most

Portland. Not the team, the traffic. A lean, not a play: when a roster stacks that much guard usage, the early-season market usually prices the names and not the minutes, and the honest edge tends to live in player props rather than sides while the rotation sorts itself out. Lillard may well be right that it works itself out. Rotations usually do. They just rarely do it before the market has already taken a position.

checked the almanac: dominique wilkins tore his achilles in january 1992 and came back the next season averaging 29.9 a game. it happens. it is also the exception people quote because it is the exception.

What I'm watching next: preseason closing lineups in Portland and Miami, and Indiana's first back-to-back handling of Haliburton. That's when these stop being storylines and start being numbers.
