Boston naming rookie left-hander Payton Tolle the Game 1 starter against the Yankees should have been a gift to New York backers. It wasn't. The Red Sox odds movement went the other direction, and that is the most interesting thing on my screen today.
The word came down this afternoon: Tolle opens Tuesday's AL Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium, with Sonny Gray and Ranger Suarez lined up behind him. That is a real rotation order, not a bullpen game dressed up as a start, and the market treated it like one.

Run the Yankees number: -148 is roughly 59.7 percent implied, -126 is roughly 55.8 percent. That is about four points of vigged win probability handed back to the underdog on a day the underdog announced a rookie starter in the Bronx. Kalshi has Boston at 47 percent. Meanwhile the over went from -130 all the way to even money while the under crept to -113, so the same money that liked Boston also liked fewer runs. Those two moves agreeing is the tell. This is not casual dog money chasing a plus price; this is a market that thinks Tolle can pitch.
The honest caveat, because I am not going to oversell a screen: those best prices sit at different shops, and some of that Yankees move is the board spreading out rather than one book taking a stand. The Red Sox +1.5 going from -157 to -165 is the cleaner signal, since it moved the same direction on juice alone. And I do not have New York's Game 1 starter in front of me yet. That name lands and the whole thing gets repriced.
So nothing cleared my number this afternoon. Boston at +125 is no longer the soft line it was at +130, and I am not paying -165 for a run and a half in a game the total wants to shrink. Mind the gap like it owes you money, but the gap closed before I got there.
What I'm watching: the Yankees' Game 1 announcement, and whether the under keeps buying juice past -113. If both tighten together, the market has already made up its mind about how this opener plays.
