Why Dan Wilson is not returning as Mariners manager
The offseason carousel started spinning before the playoffs did. Dan Wilson, 57, who managed Seattle to the ALCS a year ago, told reporters Sunday he will not be back, saying the season "has been very difficult, and of course the results have not been what any of us had expected." One year from an ALCS to an opening. That is the job.
Arizona is the second chair wobbling. Torey Lovullo is the winningest manager in Diamondbacks history at 750-768, a record that tells you exactly how long he has been there and exactly what he has been working with, and after the Snakes missed the playoffs on the final day again he said Sunday he is uncertain about his future. A decade of one-run seasons and a sub-.500 career mark that still leads the franchise. That is not an indictment, that is a franchise history in one number.

Philadelphia went from collapse to clinch, beating Tampa Bay 7-3 on Sunday to take the last NL wild-card spot on the last day. Bryce Harper and a few thousand unclenched stomachs. The Phillies are at Atlanta on Tuesday at 2:00 ET.
The Yankees handed Game 1 of the best-of-three wild-card series against Boston to Cam Schlittler, the AL Cy Young favorite, for Tuesday night at 8:10 ET. Boston got Willson Contreras back in the lineup for the finale after eight games out with a hurt right hand, which matters more than the box score does: days ago his availability was a real question, and now it is trending the other way. Their scheduled finale against Baltimore, by the way, never happened. Sustained rain, canceled.

Lindor's 300th came in the second inning of a game the Mets lost, which is its own small New York poem. Colson Montgomery broke the single-season strikeout record Friday and said he would rather talk about the positives from year two, and honestly, good: he is 24-ish games removed from nothing and his team is playing Tuesday. Tony Vitello finished his first year in San Francisco by getting run for the seventh time, most in the majors, over a checked swing. Consistency counts.
What I'm watching
Rotation orders for the other three wild-card series, and how Houston lines up behind Game 1. A best-of-three is a starter market as much as a team market, and the gap between a club's ace and its third arm is where the real number lives.
